Don Roger & Isabel

Roger Mairena and his wife Isabel have a farm near the Arenal Nature Reserve. Don Roger has a degree in agronomy, and he loves sharing technical knowledge and tips with visiting roasters. He takes pride in his ability to prune trees with special techniques, training his Bourbon to grow in even form next to his plot of Caturra. Their Java is a rare variety adapted from Indonesia that, given the farm's high altitude, makes for a flavor-packed cup with notes of creaminess, sweetness, good body, and jasmine.

A stream begins on the family's property, allowing clean spring water to wash coffee and share with the community. The farm has a unique system of PVC tubing with tiny perforations underneath the groves of trees, so the earth filters that runoff from washing coffee instead of polluting streams.

Gold Mountain Coffee Growers is a social enterprise that, in addition to its farm (Finca Idealista), works directly with coffee producers in Nicaragua, including Roger and Isabel, to connect them with roasters abroad. GMCG is on the ground all the time, teaming up with producers willing to take the steps necessary (and whose altitude and soil conditions allow them) to produce high-cupping specialty coffee. During picking, they stand on every partner farm to ensure ripeness with refractometers and ripeness bracelets. GMCG also carries out sustainable development projects in communities, such as free computing classes for the coffee communities, medical assistance, microcredit, running water in schools, and educational supplies.

Thanks to Gold Mountain Coffee Growers, who helped us team up with the producers Roger & Isabel to offer their fantastic coffee.
